Future Rangers Field Trip: Moholoholo Rehabilitation Center and Blyde River Canyon

Future Rangers Field Trip: Moholoholo Rehabilitation Center and Blyde River Canyon

At the Global Conservation Corps, we believe that experiences play a crucial role in learning and development. The access to different environments allows students to build connections between abstract concepts in the classroom and concrete realities. This, in turn, fosters their curiosity and creativity and sparks a passion for learning.

Needless to say, being able to take our Future Rangers on various field trips is one of our biggest priorities. Through the support of our partners, we thankfully are able to plan these excursions regularly.

During the tour, a presentation was given to the students, exposing them to the impacts of snaring, poaching, and overexploitation of wildlife. This experience required learners to think about their own actions and how they contribute to a better world for wildlife.

After the presentation, students were taken on an hour and a half tour through the rehab center, viewing iconic predator species such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, caracals, servals, and honey badgers. They also got to view the center’s raptors and birds of prey that are common in the region. Their guide delivered the entire experience in the local language of Xitsonga, driving home a sense of ownership and connection for the students.

After the trip to the Rehabilitation Centre, students were taken to the iconic Blyde River Canyon. Guided by GCC’s Mbhoni & Promise, our Future Rangers traversed the Peninsula Trail – a 2.3km hike inside the third largest canyon in the world. Learners were exposed to a variety of lessons on the ecology, vegetation and composition of this striking landscape.

Without a doubt, the impact of the recent trip, and similar excursions, are immense for our Future Rangers. Being this close to wildlife and nature, taking in its sights and sounds, aims to spark a love for the environment. Through projects like this, we are working towards raising the next generation of wildlife leaders and heroes.
